When you think of Ocean County, the beaches and boardwalks probably come to mind, but tucked away at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is a hidden gem you might not know about: NAVAIR Lakehurst. This is where some of the Navy’s most important aviation technology comes to life.

Recently, the Monmouth-Ocean Development Council’s Technology Committee had the opportunity to tour NAVAIR Lakehurst, getting a firsthand look at the incredible engineering, technology, and history that make it one of Ocean County’s most impressive hidden gems.

Beyond the massive hangars and cutting-edge equipment, NAVAIR Lakehurst is a place where innovation meets history. Engineers, scientists, and technicians work side by side to develop next-generation aviation and safety technology that supports the Navy’s fleet worldwide. From catapult systems that launch jets in seconds to emergency arresting nets that save lives, the work here is critical and quietly impressive.

For locals, it’s easy to drive past without realizing the incredible engineering and aviation feats happening just beyond the gates. Next time you’re exploring Ocean County, think of Lakehurst, a real-life blend of history, innovation, and even a touch of Hollywood magic.

Did You Know?

  • Movie Magic Meets Reality: Remember the final scene in Top Gun: Maverick where Maverick’s jet can’t land? The net that saves the plane isn’t just Hollywood imagination; it’s real, and it’s made right here at Lakehurst. In fact, this is the only place in the U.S. where these aircraft net capture systems are created. Additionally, the ship in the movie was navigated by NAVAIR’s own Captain Howell.
  • Engineering Marvels: Lakehurst is more than just nets and hangars. Engineers at the facility design, build, and test aircraft launch and recovery systems, including catapult systems used to safely launch fighter jets from aircraft carriers, arresting gear to stop aircraft in emergencies, jet blast deflectors, and other critical aviation technology. Every system is rigorously tested to ensure pilots can take off and land safely under extreme conditions.
  • Runway Ready for Space: The base has a 12,000-foot runway, one of the few in the country that could accommodate a landing by the Space Shuttle. It’s used for testing, training, and emergency landings, a testament to the cutting-edge aviation technology housed here.
  • Record-Breaking Hangars: Lakehurst is home to Hangars 5 and 6, built in 1943, which are among the largest single-arch wooden structures in the world. Each hangar stretches over a thousand feet long and soars 180 feet high, big enough to house an entire airship.
  • History Lives Here: This facility isn’t just about modern technology. Lakehurst is where airships like the Hindenburg and USS Akron once called home, giving it a storied past that aviation enthusiasts love.
  • A Thriving Workforce: NAVAIR Lakehurst is the largest employer in Ocean County, employing over 1,800 civilian engineers, technicians, and support staff, along with approximately 230 military personnel. Together, they form a dedicated team that drives innovation and supports the Navy’s aviation needs.
